This article explores the musical environment in which Brant spent the last decade of his life in Strasbourg. In particular, the secular musical practice of his humanistic friends is reconstructed on the basis of textual evidence and surviving compositions. The German song played a particular role as a polyphonic setting for voices and transcribed for keyboard instruments. Two pieces associated with Strasbourg are discussed in more detail. The members of the sodalitas litteraria, who were partly professional musicians, partly musical amateurs, also maintained their friendly network through making music in everyday life. Central figures were Symphorian Altbießer (Pollio), Johannes Rudolfinger, Ottmar Nachtgall (Luscinius) and Sixt Dietrich. Furthermore, the plainsong quote on the title woodcut of Brant’s ›Ship of Fools‹ is explained at the outset.

Das Buch unternimmt den Versuch dar, die Funktionsweisen des spätmittelalterlichen städtischen Gerichtswesens auf die Leitunterscheidung ‚Inklusion / Exklusion‘ zurückzuführen. Ausgegangen wird von der Annahme, dass Konflikte an sich die Zugehörigkeit der Streitenden zur spätmittelalterlichen Stadt gefährdeten. Dies wird aus der in der Vormoderne ganz anders gelagerten Vergesellschaftung des Einzelnen hergeleitet, wie es u. a. von Max Weber und Niklas Luhmann dargelegt wurde. Allein ein Konflikt zwischen Mitgliedern des genossenschaftlichen Verbandes, so die These, bedeutete immer zugleich eine Gefährdung der Mitgliedschaft in diesem Verband. Das gesamte Prozessgeschehen, so die zweite These, wurde durch die Infragestellung von Zugehörigkeit geprägt, weil das Gericht der Ort war, an dem über Inklusion/Exklusion verhandelt wurde. Konkret beleuchtet werden u. a. Gericht und städtischer Raum, Professionalisierung des Personals sowie Rituale und Schriftlichkeit.

ZusammenfassungIn our paper we analyse translations of Italian and French songs into German from the late sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century. The methods of translation employed range from a narrow focus on the words and music of the original song to free variation. Analysing the bimedial relationship of words and music is the principal focus of our study. We ask: What consequences does a translation have for the text-sound relationship? In the first part of the study, we develop a heuristic methodology that describes this phenomenon while taking into account the cultural context of each translation. In the second part, we put this model to the test by examining a prominent song collection: Heinrich Albert’s Arien oder Melodeyen (Königsberg, 1638–1650), which contains a large number of as yet unidentified French and Italian originals.
