is there a difference between making improvements and solving problems? On sunday I posted about admiring problems rather than solving them, today I want to explore the difference between improving something that works and solving a problem.Solving a Problem:Identifying Issues: This involves recognising that a problem exists and needs resolution.Root Cause Analysis: Techniques like the 5 Whys and McKinsey Fishbone Diagram help drill down to the root cause.Actionable Solutions: Developing specific strategies to address the root cause and prevent recurrence.Improving Something That Works:Enhancing Efficiency: Focuses on making existing processes or products better, faster, or more efficient.Incremental Improvements: Often involves small, continuous improvements rather than large, sweeping changes.Proactive Innovation: Seeking opportunities for enhancement even when there are no apparent problems.do we need a frame work - I always like a framework.it starts with noticing that the team is admiring the problem, and you know the actual problems are not the ones you find in a RAID. Show me the team who have written down, there is a risk of not implementing new solutions because we are afraid of change - maybe management might note that but teams don't really acknowledge fear. That big behomoth thing loses power when you break it down, say it has a start and a finish, not many problems we meet on the daily are infinite.so a bunch of little problems are easier to tackle right? we start talking about how to solve rather than how difficult it is - we create a language and make sure we are talking about the same thing, we get up close and personal and the problem shrinks. You know that thing about trying, try things, nothing needs to be perfect the first time, so try fail and learn. What Problems and Improvements have in common is that when you move them the team is not accepting the status quo. Here it helps to have an idea about all the things that are opportunities, in order to prioritise, prioritise based on ease or value, doesn't matter how but make sure there is buy in.Promote a culture that values both solving problems and proactively seeking improvements. Provide necessary training and recognise efforts. In some ways this 'framework' is common sense - to really drive innovation its important to have structure, and to keep it resh - we are not checking boxes we are creating success through innovation, we are creating high performing teams.#Innovation #Leadership #Productivity #Framework #Teamwork

Insightful way of breaking down and separating the need to fix from the need to improve.

๐Ÿ›๐Ÿฆ‹ Caterpillar to Butterfly: The Power of Event Feedback๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ›In the wise words of Darwinโ€ฆ it's either adapt or die. While this might sound a bit extreme in the context of event feedback, the core message still rings true. Change is not just inevitable, it's essential for growth. ๐Ÿ›โžก๏ธ๐Ÿฆ‹, especially when feedback comes from a variety of sources such as attendees, speakers, sponsors, and staff. Here's how we can channel this feedback by drawing on insights from industry leaders:๐ŸชดEmbrace a Growth Mindset: View feedback as a gateway to learning rather than just criticism. #Carol Dweckโ€™s work highlights this as the foundation for growth.๐ŸชดCollect Feedback Proactively: Use tools like SurveyMonkey or Google Forms to capture insights from attendees, speakers, and staff.๐ŸชดLook for the โ€œWhyโ€ in Comments: Understand the root causes of comments to drive change as #Simon Sinek work suggests, is key to meaningful improvement.๐ŸชดAct on Feedback to Innovate: Let the agile, customer-centric approach of #Jeff Bezos inspires us to use feedback as a springboard for innovation.๐ŸชดCommunicate and Acknowledge: Show how feedback has shaped changes. Itโ€™s crucial for fostering engagement and acknowledging contributions.๐ŸชดReflect and Forge Ahead: post-event, reflect and set SMART goals for future improvements.๐ŸชดSeek Wisdom from Those Who've Excelled: Draw on case studies and expert insights for inspiration and benchmarks.๐ŸชดCultivate Team Involvement: Involve your team in feedback-driven improvements to foster a culture of continuous growth and unity.By embracing these steps, you not only elevate your events but also embody the principle that feedback is a stepping stone to excellence. Letโ€™s transform and thrive together! ๐Ÿฆ‹"

I want us to go on a hypothetical journey together that Iโ€™m sure you can easily relate to.๐Ÿš€ Embracing the New: Turning "What If?" Into "Why Not?"Ever been on a team where the motto seemed to be "better safe than sorry"? In our imaginary company, imagine a marketing crew that has this down patโ€”sticking to the same old strategies because, well, taking risks was just not done. As expected, their feedback sessions were unproductive. Letโ€™s just say they were more about dodging bullets than sparking brilliance. Now, as the next step, imagine taking a turn for the bold: Imagine they start flipping the script on feedback (maybe after bringing in a team coach?). No more post-mortems on past failuresโ€ฆno more finger-pointingโ€ฆ but rather shifting gears to brainstorming all the possibilitiesโ€”focusing not on what went wrong, but on what could go right.Letโ€™s dream some more: can you imagine what would happen if they were to transform routine reviews into dynamic think-tanks? Feedback cas the capacity to morph from a dreaded chore into a powerful tool for change, sparking questions like "What if?" and more crucially, "Why not?"Itโ€™s not a stretch to imagine that such a mindset and feedback culture change would yield a marked payoff, is it? With the courage to venture into uncharted territory, the team is launching different, more relevant, groundbreaking campaigns that are bold and fresh. No wonder there is the potential of increased market share and igniting a new level of excitement and innovation across the team.๐ŸŽ‰ Takeaway: When feedback nurtures curiosity and champions risk-taking, creativity and innovation comes to life.--๐Ÿ‘‰ Ready to transform your teamโ€™s approach and let creativity soar? ๐ŸŒŸ Transform Your Team: Play to Win, Not Just Survive! ๐Ÿš€Leaders, are you facing the challenge of unlocking your teamโ€™s full potential? Simon Sinek famously said, "Teams that work together, win together." Yet, many teams struggle to shift from surviving to winning. Why do some teams thrive while others merely get by? ๐Ÿค” The secret lies in their mindset: Playing to Win versus Playing to Survive. My approach to agile team development sets the tone for this crucial mindset shift:๐ŸŽฏ Clear Goals: I help teams set clear, achievable objectives, driving focus and direction.๐Ÿ’ก Innovative Problem-Solving: Encouraging creativity and adaptive thinking.๐Ÿค Collaborative Synergy: Promoting effective communication and cooperation.๐Ÿš€ Continuous Improvement: Embracing feedback and seeking growth opportunities. In contrast, teams playing to survive often face:๐ŸŒŠ Lack of Direction: Struggling without clear purpose.๐Ÿ›‘ Avoidance of Challenges: Fear of failure stifling innovation.๐Ÿค Communication Breakdown: Inhibited dialogue and collaboration. With over 80% of teams not reaching their potential, imagine the positive impact on revenue, customer satisfaction, and employee retention if your team played to win. The immersive experiences and practical exercises mirror real work challenges. During my professional journey, Iโ€™ve often encountered the โ€œjust give me a solutionโ€ approach when raising concerns about project issues. While this may seem like a direct way to handle problems, I believe it often leads to suboptimal outcomes and missed opportunities for real improvement. Hereโ€™s my perspective:- ๐—ข๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐˜€ ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€: By focusing solely on immediate solutions, we risk ignoring the underlying causes of problems. The highest performing teams are the same teams who report the most human errors and mistakes ๐Ÿค”โ—โ“ What does this tell us? It tells us that to be an effective and high-performing team, we have to be consciously reporting on the way we are working together and proactively identifying opportunities for improvement.Last week we spent some time circulating the prolific research on psychological safety by Harvard Business School Professor Amy Edmondson to our clients due to the intrinsic link with the work we deliver. Cultural Calculator is a culture management platform that provides proactive tracking and feedback on ways of working to empower:๐Ÿค“ Learning๐Ÿš€ Innovation๐ŸŒฑ Sharing new ideas๐Ÿ› Building better organizations"Every time we withhold [our voice], we rob our colleagues of small moments to learn. We donโ€™t innovate. We donโ€™t come up with new ideasโ€ฆ We donโ€™t contribute to creating a better organizationโ€This quote from Edmondson really is the crux of everything Cultural Calculator offers. The thing that has always driven and inspired me is knowing that there is so much wisdom sitting within every organization but there just isn't always the tools or structure to unlock it. I am on a mission for it to become business as usual for every team to have the opportunity to unlock their wisdom and build something better. Distributed empowerment for reporting on and solving challenges at the right level is the way forward. Let's help make this a standard practice.#culture #workculture #culturestrategy #waysofworking #operations #peopleoperations #businessperformance

A rare pair of skills(No. 291)Years ago, I reported to a Leader 'X'. 'X' had studied in the finest of institutions and had some impressive work experiences. His approach to work reflected all of these. We, as a Unit, were dealing with some tough deliverables at that point in time and 'X' was down in the trenches, with us, from Day 1. Over time, we were able to weather many a storm successfully under his tutelage. A great deal of credit for this went to one specific trait of his...The ability to strike a balance between creative problem-solving and leveraging existing solutions. When I reflect back some things that 'X' did exceedingly well, they were :-Understanding the problem thoroughly....he would bombard us with questions..no fear of them being considered trivial or silly...till he got the clarity he wanted he would go on and on...many of these discussions helped us identify areas where established methods might suffice or need tweaking.-Researching existing solutions. Blessed with an excellent memory and the patience to consume knowledge, he would be able to direct us to diverse approaches, solutions that were used out there. Not everything was relevant or useful always but it added to our overall knowledge. -He knew how to use "Combinational Creativity" (the process of generating new and innovative ideas by combining or recombining existing elements in different ways) effectively. That help us build or improve as the situation required.-In the event we were to do something, he would ensure we always had our eyes on the ball- the benefits of a new approach had to outweigh the time and resources needed to develop and implement it.-Open communication and collaboration which helped us in being upfront about the challenges we faced and how we could sort them out together. 'X', for me was, someone who could both 'innovate efficiently' and 'efficiently innovate'....a rare pair of skills. Combining them effectively....an even rarer skill. What has been your experience using this pair of skills as a Leader or working under Leaders who had this pair of skills ?Coming back to 'X'.It is said that tough times don't last, and that tough people do.It is also true that good times don't last....'X' was with us barely for an year before he moved on....Why....that's a story for some other day. #mindset #creativity #innovation #leveragewhatonehas #existingsolutions #new #noteverythingneedbenew

Team. You keep using that word. What does it mean? I adopted a definition I found a while back. "Real" team? You can just tell the difference.A team is a small number of people withcomplementary skills who are committed to acommon purpose, performance goals, andapproach for which they are mutuallyaccountable.Real teams don't emerge unless individuals onthem take risks involving conflict, trust, interdependence, and hard work.- Katzenbach, J.R. & Smith, D.K.
